The Snow Storm Didn't Stop Them. Solar Energy Information Night - Ontario MicroFIT and FIT Programs

Jim Cummings

Despite a huge snow storm, over 40 people gathered at the Community Resource Centre in Killaloe on Thursday evening, February 25th for a free solar energy workshop presented by the Ottawa River Institute.  Presenter Jim Cummings, of Clearly Solar in Ottawa, provided interesting and valuable information on the new Feed in Tariff (FIT and MicroFIT) programs being offered to Ontario homeowners, farmers, business owners and institutions by the Ontario Power Authority.

The FIT and MicroFIT programs are being implemented as part of the Ontario government’s Green Energy Act, which is making it possible for Ontario residents to feed electricity from renewable sources into the Ontario Hydro grid, and to make a profit from the sale of that electricity.  Electricity production from solar was the focus of the workshop, however electricity production from other renewable sources such as, wind, micro-hydro and biomass are also available under this program.

Home Energy Upgrades Workshops- October and November 2009

The Ottawa River Institute presented eight Home Energy Upgrades workshops across Renfrew County again in October and November of 2009.  These extremely popular and informative free workshops were offered in the communities of Killaloe, Pembroke, Griffith, Eganville, Arnprior, Renfrew, and Beachburg-Lapasse.
Seventy-five appreciative households received kits of materials to take-home and apply to their homes to increase the home's energy efficiency and help to create a more comfortable home.

Thanks go out to the Ottawa River Power Corporation, Renfrew Hydro and Eganville Generation who helped to financially support the purchasing of the take-home kits, and thanks also to Mike and Peggy Brooks of Brooks Energy Solutions and Dave Johnson of Know Your Home Inspections who provided Blower Door test demonstrations at two of the eight workshops.

Two newspaper articles reporting on these workshops are posted below.
